Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is considering weapon detectors for schools.
MCPS Chief of Security and Compliance Marcus Jones — formerly the county’s police chief — said the school system is in the early stages of looking at different available products. MCPS is taking a “very hard look” at the option and it is something “we may be venturing into in the near future,” Jones said during a county weekly media briefing Wednesday. The same day, two students and two teachers were killed in a school shooting at a high school in Georgia.
Last month, school board members voted to purchase and install vape detectors in high schools.
As part of security measures currently in place, Jones said that some high schools are requiring students to wear their student IDs all day. He observed the initiative at a couple of schools and says most students were wearing them.
“When the administrator or staff member sees that a student is not wearing them, they kindly ask them to show it” and to wear it, Jones said. He said it is “working out pretty well.”
